This lecture took a fresh look at how gender and identity play out in the world of martial arts. Traditionally seen as male-dominated and closely linked to ideas of strength and violence, martial arts are now welcoming more women than ever. The session explored whether this shift is reshaping long-standing gender norms—or if resistance still remains. It also touched on current discussions around transgender inclusion and highlighted how gender connects with other aspects of identity, such as sexuality and ethnicity, in today’s martial arts culture.
This lecture took place on Wednesday, 22 April, 2026.
