On 20 May 2026, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), in close collaboration with UNICA and Foro Italico University of Rome, hosted a full-day symposium dedicated to exploring the role of martial arts in building healthier and more inclusive communities. The event took place at VUB Main Campus (U-Residence) and brought together researchers, practitioners, and policy stakeholders in a vibrant and engaging setting.
From the very start, the symposium created a lively space for exchange. Through keynote lectures, thematic sessions, and panel discussions, participants explored how martial arts can contribute to community well-being, while also addressing important questions around health, safety, and responsible practice.
A highlight of the day was the keynote contribution by Alex Channon (University of Brighton, UK), holder of the 2026 Willy Calewaert Chair, who shared insights from his work on the social and health dimensions of martial arts. His input sparked thoughtful discussions that continued throughout the sessions and into informal conversations between participants.
The programme focused on the following key themes:
- how martial arts can support social development and community cohesion;
- current health and safety challenges in practice and competition;
- the importance of policy and governance frameworks to ensure safe and inclusive participation.
Beyond the formal sessions, the symposium stood out as a space for connection—bringing together different perspectives from academia, sport organisations, policymakers, and the wider martial arts community. The atmosphere was both professional and welcoming, encouraging dialogue across disciplines and experiences.
