Fred Coalter
Biography
Fred Coalter has worked and researched for more than 30 years with practitioners in the leisure industries, in particular in sports-related contexts. His focus has always been on working with and for client organisations. His interests relate to various aspects of both sport development and sport-fordevelopment organisations (in the UK, Africa, India and Latin America): the determinants of sport participation, the presumed social benefits of sport, the efficiency and effectiveness of organisations and their programmes and organisational development and sustainability. In addition to his research and consultancy activities, Fred Coalter has been a member of a range of strategic and governmental bodies. Fred Coalter’s expertise in the areas of organisational (re)development and evaluation, in particular for sport-for-development organisations, is complemented by his experience of working with such organisations from different cultures around the world, including in India, Africa and Brazil. But he also has a wealth of UK experience, including eight years as chair of the board of Edinburgh Leisure, a leisure trust delivering sport and recreation services on behalf of Edinburgh City Council. In recent years, Fred Coalter has established a research collaboration with the Sport&Society (SASO) research group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) that has resulted in his appointment as Visiting Professor at SASO (5%). He is also Visiting Professor at Leeds Beckett University.
